Trump says Iran agreed to open-ended nuclear inspections, Tehran denies claim

WASHINGTON/GENEVA, June 23 — U.S. President Donald Trump said Iran had agreed to open-ended nuclear inspections as part of a developing peace process, but Tehran denied the U.S. account and said no such commitment had been made.
Trump said Iran had accepted the highest level of nuclear inspections far into the future, pushing back against what he called Iranian denials of the terms discussed in recent talks.
The U.S. position was also backed by Vice President JD Vance, who said talks with Iranian officials in Buergenstock, Switzerland, had created a foundation for a final accord and that Tehran had agreed to allow nuclear inspectors to return.
Iran rejected that account. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Iranian officials had not opened discussions on the country’s nuclear program and had no plans for International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to visit damaged nuclear facilities.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, also denied that Tehran had accepted outside conditions on the use of unfrozen assets.
Washington agreed to waive sanctions on Iran for 60 days from Monday after an initial round of talks under a nascent peace deal aimed at ending more than three months of war.
Trump said any Iranian assets released under the arrangement would be placed in escrow and used to buy humanitarian supplies from the United States, including food and medical goods.
Tehran said decisions over any unfrozen funds would remain Iran’s own and rejected any foreign role in determining how the assets are used.
The competing accounts highlight the fragility of the early peace process, with Washington presenting the talks as a step toward a broader settlement and Tehran denying that nuclear concessions have been made.
