Tanker Hit by Unknown Projectile West of Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu

RIYADH, August 24 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile 63 nautical miles west of Saudi Arabia’s port city of Yanbu, causing a fire on the vessel’s main deck, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said.
All crew members are safe and accounted for, according to UKMTO. No environmental impact has been reported.
“Vessels are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity.”
The UK maritime agency did not identify the vessel, the type or origin of the projectile, or the party responsible for the incident.
Saudi Arabia has redirected much of its oil exports through Red Sea ports, including Yanbu, following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have targeted Saudi shipping in the Red Sea during recent weeks. Yanbu is approximately 900 kilometres from the nearest part of Yemen.
Neither UKMTO nor the information reported by CNN linked the projectile that struck the tanker to the Houthis.
