RIYADH, March 20 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Friday his government had agreed to propose a temporary rent freeze as part of a new package of measures aimed at cushioning the economic impact of the war with Iran.

Sanchez said the measure formed part of a second royal decree agreed by the two parties in his governing coalition, though it still requires parliamentary approval, where the government does not hold a majority.

The proposed rent freeze is included in a package of 80 economic measures worth 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion), according to Sanchez, and follows a similar approach to steps Spain adopted during the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Announcing the measures, Sanchez also repeated his criticism of the conflict in the Middle East and said Spain was facing the consequences of decisions taken by governments involved in the crisis.

The package also includes measures designed to accelerate Spain’s shift to renewable energy, including subsidies for the installation of solar panels and heat pumps.

Sanchez said Spain’s push toward energy transition had left the country better prepared than many comparable economies to absorb the energy shock stemming from the war on Iran.
