Saudi Informatics Team Wins Three Awards at IOI 2026

RIYADH, August 15 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Saudi Arabia’s national informatics team won three awards at the International Olympiad in Informatics 2026 in Uzbekistan, including the Kingdom’s first silver medal in the history of the competition.
Mohammed Nasser Al-Asmari, from the Royal Commission for Jubail’s education department, secured the historic silver medal.
Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Aiban won a bronze medal, while Saad Bandar Al-Arifi received a certificate of appreciation. Both students are from the General Directorate of Education in Riyadh Region.
The latest results increased Saudi Arabia’s cumulative tally at the International Olympiad in Informatics to 14 awards: one silver medal, eight bronze medals and five certificates of appreciation. Saudi students won one bronze medal and two certificates of appreciation at the previous edition.
Four Saudi high school students are competing at IOI 2026, which runs in Uzbekistan from August 9 to 16. The event has brought together 386 students representing 97 countries.
The Saudi team was trained and prepared under the supervision of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), in strategic partnership with the Ministry of Education and with the sponsorship of Tatweer Education Holding.
The selection process included intensive training camps, qualifying competitions and simulated contests designed to develop problem-solving, programming and strategy-building skills.
First held in 1989, the International Olympiad in Informatics tests participants individually through problems requiring advanced skills in algorithm design, data structures, programming, solution testing and verification.
