Saudi Foreign Minister Calls for Reform of Organization of Islamic Cooperation

RIYADH, August 27 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah called for serious reform of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation during an extraordinary ministerial session held in Jeddah on Thursday.
Prince Faisal told the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Member States that reform was needed to strengthen the organization’s ability to implement its resolutions, improve the efficiency of its institutions and provide more effective tools for collective action.
“The Islamic world, with its demographic, political, economic, and civilizational weight, possesses the capabilities that qualify it to play an active role in shaping international balances.”
The foreign minister also reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state under the two-state solution. He condemned the issuance of a new tender for settlement units under the E1 project, saying its location would isolate East Jerusalem from its Palestinian surroundings and threaten the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state.
Prince Faisal also reiterated the Kingdom’s condemnation of incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli officials and settlers under the protection of Israeli forces.
“The strength of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation derives from the solidarity of its member states, the unity of their positions, and their ability to translate the principles and common interests that unite them into effective collective action.”
Prince Faisal affirmed that Saudi Arabia would continue supporting efforts to strengthen the organization’s role and serve the causes of the Islamic world. He also congratulated new Secretary-General Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed and expressed the Kingdom’s appreciation to Hissein Brahim Taha for his work during his tenure.
