Saudi Arabia, Seven Other Countries Welcome UK Ban on Israeli Settlement Goods
RIYADH, September 9 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Saudi Arabia and seven other countries welcomed Britain’s decision to ban imports of goods from Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and restrict related services, urging broader international action against activities that sustain the settlements.
The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates said they hoped the British measures would encourage similar steps and help hold settlement organisations and individuals accountable for activities the ministers described as illegal.
They also welcomed a separate statement by 12 countries setting out their intentions to introduce national restrictions, support European restrictions on trade in settlement goods, or actively consider these and other measures under their respective national procedures.
That statement was issued by the foreign ministers of Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Britain.
The eight ministers said the announced intentions were consistent with international law, UN Security Council Resolution 2334 of 2016 and the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion of July 19, 2024. They cited states’ obligations not to recognise as legal the situation arising from Israel’s unlawful occupation or assist in maintaining it.
They called on Israel to revoke measures related to settlement activity and other steps aimed at changing the geographic and demographic character of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
On Gaza, the ministers reaffirmed that it is an integral part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory and urged full and immediate implementation of President Trump’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict. They said its implementation should ensure security and stability, address humanitarian needs, facilitate reconstruction and recovery, and lay the foundations for lasting peace.
The ministers said a two-state solution was the only viable route to a just, lasting and comprehensive peace. They called for an independent, sovereign, contiguous and viable Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
