Saudi Arabia Says Red Sea Maritime Security Is a Shared International Responsibility
UNITED NATIONS, September 16, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Saudi Arabia told the UN Security Council that protecting maritime corridors and ensuring freedom of navigation were shared international responsibilities as it warned of threats to shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait.
Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Alwasil, said countries must comply with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions to safeguard vital maritime routes.
Alwasil said threats posed by the Houthis could affect international trade and global supply chains and carry wider consequences for regional and international security.
He condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and the targeting of commercial vessels and maritime corridors. He also reaffirmed the Kingdom’s right to protect its national security.
Alwasil highlighted Saudi Arabia’s launch of the Multinational Maritime Defense Alliance, which aims to strengthen maritime security and protect freedom of navigation amid threats to the region’s shipping routes.
The Saudi representative called on the international community to meet its responsibilities in safeguarding maritime corridors and protecting the movement of global trade.
He said stronger international action would help secure supply chains and support regional and international security and stability.
Saudi Arabia also reaffirmed its support for efforts to reduce tensions and reach a comprehensive and sustainable political solution to the crisis in Yemen.
Alwasil reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
