Riyadh, September 7, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The skies over Saudi Arabia witnessed a rare astronomical event this evening as a total lunar eclipse turned the moon a deep crimson red, a phenomenon scientifically known as the “Blood Moon,” the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Astronomy enthusiasts and photographers gathered across the Kingdom to observe the event, the most extensive of its kind since 2018. The eclipse began with partial phases as the moon entered Earth’s shadow before reaching totality, which lasted for several hours and was visible both to the naked eye and through telescopes.

Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Jeddah Astronomy Society, explained that the moon’s red hue occurs when sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering shorter blue wavelengths while allowing longer red and orange wavelengths to reach the lunar surface.

The eclipse forms part of a series of astronomical events visible in the Kingdom this year, highlighting the importance of observing natural phenomena as a way to expand scientific knowledge and appreciation of the universe.
