Romania Shoots Down Second Drone Near Ukraine Border in Two Days

BUCHAREST, July 25, Saudi Arabia Breaking News — Romania’s military shot down another drone near its border with Ukraine on Saturday, extending an unprecedented series of active interceptions as Russian attacks intensify across the neighbouring Black Sea region.
The aircraft was destroyed at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time near Sfantu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta, President Nicusor Dan announced.
Radar systems detected the drone entering Romanian airspace eight minutes earlier, prompting the deployment of two F-16 fighter jets, according to the Defence Ministry.
Romanian authorities have not yet established the origin of the aircraft. The interception came one day after prosecutors identified another drone shot down by the military as Russian.
Friday’s operation marked the first time Romania had destroyed an aircraft involved in one of the repeated airspace incursions recorded since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The two interceptions within 24 hours represent a significant shift in Romania’s response to aerial threats approaching its eastern frontier. The NATO member shares a 650-kilometre border with Ukraine and has documented approximately 30 airspace violations linked to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure across the Danube.
Security concerns increased sharply in May when a Russian drone struck an apartment building in Galati, injuring two people. The incident was the first attack during the war to cause casualties in a densely populated area of a NATO country.
Romania’s military leadership has warned that Russian operations around Odesa are expanding ahead of the harvest season, placing further pressure on the Black Sea routes used for regional energy supplies and agricultural trade.
