RIYADH, June 6 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Riyadh Air received its first two custom-built Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, marking a key step in the launch of Saudi Arabia’s new national carrier.

The aircraft arrived in tandem at about 10 a.m. local time and received a water cannon salute upon touchdown.

The aircraft, operating under the call signs Riyadh 1 and Riyadh 2 and registered as HZ-RXAA and HZ-RXAB, are the first of 72 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners ordered by Riyadh Air.

The airline plans to expand its fleet to more than 180 narrow-body and wide-body aircraft.

Riyadh Air aims to connect the Saudi capital to more than 100 global destinations by 2030 and plans to fly to nearly 20 destinations by the end of this year.

Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas described the arrival of the first custom-built Dreamliners as a historic moment for the airline and Saudi aviation.

“Not only are we building an airline, we are opening a new gateway to the world from the heart of the Kingdom,” Douglas said.
