RIYADH, December 22 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Minister of State, Cabinet Member, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve Development Authority Prince Turki bin Mohammed bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz visited several locations within the reserve, including historical landmarks and the recently accredited dark sky site in the Great Nafud Desert.

The dark sky site has been accredited by DarkSky International, recognising efforts to protect natural night skies through the reduction of light pollution and the application of international dark sky management standards.

During the visit, Prince Turki was briefed on measures implemented to preserve the site’s astronomical characteristics, support ecosystem sustainability, and limit the impact of artificial lighting on the surrounding environment.

The dark sky site, located within the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve in the Great Nafud Desert, covers approximately 13,416 square kilometres, making it one of the largest certified dark sky sites in the region.

The accreditation places the site among more than 250 locations worldwide recognised for protection against light pollution and positions the area as a destination for astronomical tourism and scientific research.

Officials said the designation supports the reserve’s role in combining environmental conservation with sustainable development and strengthens its profile in environmental and astronomical tourism.
