Pope Leo XIV Condemns Threat Against Iranian People, Urges Global Push for Peace

Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday denounced what he described as a threat against all the people of Iran, calling it “truly unacceptable” and warning that attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law.

Speaking to reporters as he left his country house in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome, Pope Leo XIV delivered some of his strongest comments yet against the war.

“Today as we all know there was this threat against all the people of Iran. This is truly unacceptable,” the pope said.

He added that any attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law, sharpening his criticism as tensions continued to rise.

Leo also urged Americans and other people of good will to contact their political leaders and congressional representatives to demand that they reject war and work for peace.

The remarks came just hours before President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to capitulate and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
