RIYADH/ISLAMABAD, April 14 - Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday on recent talks between the United States and Iran and said he would visit Saudi Arabia and Turkey this week to support peace efforts, according to a statement from the president's office.
The announcement came amid reports that Pakistan is seeking to host a second round of talks between Washington and Tehran in the coming days.
According to the statement, Zardari urged Sharif and other officials to remain engaged with the United States, Iran and other key regional and global powers to sustain the peace process and promote regional stability.
The president also praised Pakistan's role in facilitating rare direct talks between Washington and Tehran.
The statement said Zardari viewed the effort as reaffirming Pakistan's position as a responsible and pivotal state in the international community and as evidence of its peacemaking credentials.
Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic outreach as efforts continue to preserve momentum in U.S.-Iran contacts and prevent a renewed escalation in regional tensions.
