Morocco’s King Appoints Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as First Woman Prime Minister

RABAT, Sept 30 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Morocco’s King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first woman prime minister after her Authenticity and Modernity Party won the largest number of seats in the September 23 parliamentary election, the royal palace said.

The king tasked El Mansouri with forming a new government following the election, in which the Authenticity and Modernity Party, known as PAM, secured 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives.

Under Morocco’s constitution, the king appoints the head of government from the political party that wins the largest number of seats in the House of Representatives.

El Mansouri’s appointment marks the first time a woman has headed Morocco’s government. PAM had been the second-largest party in the outgoing governing coalition before finishing first in the September election.

The party does not hold an outright parliamentary majority, leaving El Mansouri to form a governing coalition as she prepares the new administration.
