Moscow, December 9, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Kremlin said on Tuesday that European assertions suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to restore the Soviet Union or intends to attack a NATO member are incorrect.
Putin, who was born in the former Soviet Union, has previously described the collapse of the U.S.S.R. as the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century,” arguing that tens of millions of Russians were impoverished and that Russia faced the risk of disintegration. Western leaders have claimed that a Russian victory in Ukraine could eventually lead to an attack on NATO.
Putin has repeatedly denied having any intention to attack NATO, stating that such an action would be irrational given NATO’s conventional military superiority.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that Putin wanted to bring back the “old Soviet Union” and that Europe must defend itself against what he called clear Russian intentions outlined in state doctrines.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the remarks, saying: “Vladimir Putin does not want to restore the U.S.S.R. because it is impossible, and he has repeatedly said this.” He added: “Apparently, Mr. Merz is not aware of this.”
Peskov also dismissed claims that Russia is preparing to attack NATO, calling them “complete stupidity.”
