RIYADH, June 22 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he is stepping down as Britain’s prime minister, yielding to pressure from lawmakers in his own party and setting the country on course for a sixth leader in seven years, CNN reported.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election,” Starmer said.
He added that he had heard the answer from the parliamentary Labour Party and accepted it.
“Every decision I’ve taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.
Starmer also said he had spoken to King Charles on Monday morning to inform him of his decision.
The announcement opens a new leadership process for the Labour Party and adds to political uncertainty in Britain after a period of repeated leadership changes.
