Iran Says It Will Reciprocate if US Honors Interim Agreement

DUBAI, September 1, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Iran will immediately take reciprocal steps if the United States resumes compliance with an interim agreement signed in June, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Tuesday.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, Pezeshkian said Tehran was prepared to respond if Washington returned to its commitments under the memorandum of understanding.
The statement followed the first direct exchange of attacks between Iran and the United States since late July. The United States struck Larak Island, while Iran subsequently attacked two US air bases in Jordan.
The interim agreement between Tehran and Washington was intended to help end the conflict that began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. The arrangement soon unravelled amid disagreements over how its provisions should be implemented.
Iran has repeatedly linked unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for global oil supplies, to Washington’s implementation of the agreement.
Pezeshkian also said that war served no country’s interests and reiterated that Tehran remained open to a negotiated settlement with Washington.
US President Donald Trump told Fox News that there would be a response to the Iranian attacks. However, he later told reporters at the White House that the renewed strikes did not indicate a return to full-scale war.
