Iran Allows Iraqi Oil Tankers Through Strait of Hormuz After Baghdad Requests

BAGHDAD, August 22 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Iran has granted permission for an unspecified number of Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after repeated requests from Baghdad, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.
Securing special access for Iraqi tankers was one of Baghdad’s main requests during Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf’s visit to Iraq, according to IRNA.
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi said Iran had facilitated the passage of vessels carrying Iraqi oil through the strait in recent days.
Speaking at the Baghdad Dialogue policy conference, Amedi said Iraqi and Iranian officials had discussed oil exports through Hormuz but that the issue remained complicated.
The authorization does not represent a full reopening of the waterway. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains considerably below pre-war levels, and ships continue to face attacks in the area.
Iraq, which produced around 4 million barrels of oil per day before the Iran war began, has been among the countries most affected by the restricted traffic.
Baghdad is also working to expand oil exports through Turkey’s Ceyhan port, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said on Friday.
The Iraqi government plans to begin exporting through Syria’s Baniyas port and Jordan’s Aqaba port, al-Zaidi added.
