Nicosia, March 5, 2026 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – European nations are working together to shore up defences in Cyprus after a British airbase on the Mediterranean island was hit by a drone attack on Monday.
France cut short the deployment of its aircraft carrier strike group to the Baltic to respond to the Iranian bombing campaign, and is coordinating with Italy and Greece to strengthen defences in Cyprus, according to a source close to French President Emmanuel Macron cited by CNN.
Italy’s defence minister Guido Crosetto confirmed his country’s involvement, saying Italy must reassess its assets in the region and respond to requests from friendly countries.
Spain is sending its Cristóbal Colón frigate to Cyprus as part of a joint deployment with the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and vessels from the Greek navy, Spain’s defence ministry said on Thursday. The ministry described Cristóbal Colón as Spain’s most technologically advanced frigate and said the deployment reflects a commitment to defending the European Union’s eastern border.
Monday’s drone attack targeted RAF Akrotiri, described as a key hub for UK air operations in the Middle East, and was believed to be the first attack on the base since 1986, according to the information provided.
