Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with the UAE
ALGIERS, September 10 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) - Algeria severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, saying actions it described as “provocative or hostile” had made the relationship untenable, without identifying specific incidents.
The Algerian foreign ministry said it summoned the UAE ambassador, notified him of the decision and gave him 48 hours to comply. It said it had “exhausted all means of preserving bilateral relations.”
Shortly after the announcement, Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, wrote on X that diplomatic relations should rest on “rationality, communication and clarity of interests”, rather than “riddles and signals that require decoding”.
Gargash did not name Algeria or explicitly connect his remarks to its decision. He said successful diplomacy required clear positions and effective management of interests and disagreements.
The diplomatic break follows Algeria’s move in February to begin cancelling an air services agreement signed with the UAE in May 2013.
The countries hold opposing positions on several regional issues. Algeria rejects normalisation with Israel, while the UAE and Morocco established diplomatic ties with Israel under the US-brokered Abraham Accords in 2020.
On Western Sahara, the UAE supports Morocco’s sovereignty claim and maintains a consulate in the territory. Algeria backs the Polisario Front, which seeks an independent Western Sahara.
