Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi Inaugurates ‘Chapters of Islamic Art: Carpets’ Exhibition at House of Wisdom in Sharjah

Sharjah, March 18, 2024 — Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), graced the opening of the ‘Chapters of Islamic Art: Carpets’ exhibition at the prestigious House of Wisdom (HoW) in Sharjah. This remarkable event celebrates the rich legacy of artisan carpets and textiles across the Muslim world.

Inspired by a section of “Chapters of Islamic Art: The Private Collection of Dr. Richard Ettinghausen,” generously donated to HoW by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the exhibition unfolds a captivating narrative of cultural heritage and historic significance.

The exhibition, spanning three months, invites visitors to explore a four-zone journey through the intricate world of Islamic carpets. Guided by Fatma Al Mahmoud, HoW’s Cultural Planning Manager, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi embarked on this enlightening tour alongside distinguished guests, including Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer (CEO of Shurooq), Mohamed Juma Al Musharrkh (CEO of Invest in Sharjah), and Reem bin Karam (Director General of the Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council).

The four zones feature a captivating blend of physical copies and digitized versions of books and manuscripts dedicated to Islamic carpets. Masterfully crafted rugs and captivating artwork inspired by the classic “Alshanof” motif with a modern twist adorn the exhibition space.

House of Wisdom’s expansive lobby has been ingeniously transformed into a haven for art enthusiasts. As visitors step inside, they are greeted by the Ettinghausen Book Collection on Carpets—a curated showcase of illuminated manuscripts and large-sized books meticulously selected from Dr. Richard Ettinghausen’s private library.

From the uniquely woven carpets of Mesopotamia (Iraq - Abbasid Period) to the intricate designs of Persian rugs, the SEHNA technique of Punjab, and the indelible Oriental carpets, each artwork narrates a tale of people, landscapes, and history. It reflects the diverse cultural heritage that resonates across the Muslim world.

Marwa Al Aqroubi, Executive Director of House of Wisdom, expressed her vision for the event: “Our primary objectives are to honor the intricate beauty of Islamic art, foster cultural dialogue, and provide a platform for both local and international artists to showcase their impressive and creative artwork. We take immense pride in housing Dr. Richard Ettinghausen’s priceless collection at HoW. As we move forward, we eagerly anticipate highlighting different sections of these works during the holy month of Ramadan and beyond, creating a compelling experience for our visitors.”

The exhibition’s second zone is a collaborative space curated in partnership with Jaipur Rugs, an Indian company renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and dedication to social responsibility. Their retail display features diverse collections, including a curated selection of vintage and antique carpets. Zone 3 further showcases contemporary UAE-based artists, adding a vibrant layer to this celebration of Islamic art.

In this convergence of tradition and innovation, the ‘Chapters of Islamic Art: Carpets’ exhibition at House of Wisdom stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of craftsmanship and creativity that transcends time and borders. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the intricate threads that weave together the rich tapestry of Islamic culture and heritage.
