Saudi Supreme Court Issues Call for Sighting of Shawwal Crescent Moon

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (April 6, 2024) - The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has issued a formal request for the observation of the Shawwal crescent moon throughout the Kingdom. The sighting, which will occur on the evening of Monday, April 8th, 2024 (corresponding to Ramadan 29th, 1445 Hijri), marks the conclusion of the holy fasting month of Ramadan and the commencement of Eid al-Fitr.

In a statement released today, the Court implored all Muslims in Saudi Arabia to participate in the sighting. The statement specifies that both naked-eye and binocular observations will be accepted, with witnesses instructed to report their sightings and register their testimonies at their nearest court.

The Supreme Court further expressed its hope for participation from individuals qualified to observe the crescent moon. The Court encourages such individuals to join designated committees established in various regions for this specific purpose. Their collaboration, the statement emphasized, is a valuable contribution to a practice that holds significant importance for the Muslim community.
