American University of Sharjah Celebrates Global Diversity with Annual Global Day Event


Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, March 3, 2024 - The American University of Sharjah (AUS) hosted its annual Global Day , fostering a vibrant celebration of multiculturalism on campus. Themed "Peace Around the World," the event brought together students, faculty, and dignitaries for a day of cultural exploration and exchange, as reported by WAM news agency.


Officially inaugurated by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS, Global Day transformed the AUS Main Plaza into a bustling hub. Over 29 pavilions representing various cultures and student-interest clubs lined the space, inviting visitors to embark on a global journey through diverse traditions, cuisines, and performances.


"AUS Global Day serves as a valuable platform for enriching the student experience," said Shaima bn Taliah, Executive Director of Student Experience at AUS. "It fosters a sense of belonging and understanding among diverse communities while allowing students to showcase their talents and cultural heritage."


Each club presented a unique display. The Emirati Cultural Club adopted a novel approach by designing their booth as a book showcasing historical UAE currency and its significance. Other highlights included Racks, a student-run business, debuting a new Sharjah-inspired board game alongside Emirati-flavored desserts. Traditional music and dance performances further enriched the Emirati experience.


"Global Day allows us to share our cultures and learn from others," said Yousef Mansour Algargawi, President of the UAE Cultural Club. "It's a beautiful opportunity to celebrate diversity and build bridges between communities."


The Palestinian Cultural Club showcased the rich tapestry of Palestinian heritage, featuring intricate embroidery, traditional attire, culinary delights, and lively dance performances. Visitors were treated to a taste of authentic dishes and captivating Dabkeh dances, along with a play depicting life in Gaza.


"We wanted to showcase the different aspects of Palestine," said Abdallah Darwish, President of the Palestinian Cultural Club. "AUS Global Day provides a wonderful platform for cultural exchange and exploration."


The Indian Cultural Club took visitors on a dazzling journey through Bollywood's history. Their meticulously crafted booth resembled the Sheesh Mahal in Jaipur, featuring a mesmerizing mirrored arch and vibrant paintings depicting iconic eras of Indian cinema. A captivating dance performance paid homage to legendary actors and unforgettable movie moments.


"We celebrate the rich tapestry of India," said Siraj Mecci, President of the Indian Cultural Club. "Our goal is to showcase the diverse dance styles and cultural elements that define our incredible country."


The AUS Global Day served as a testament to the university's vibrant multicultural community. By fostering understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures, the event promotes a spirit of global peace and unity.
