Zara Owner Amancio Ortega Donates €100 Million for Flood Relief in Valencia
Valencia, November 5 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Amancio Ortega, the founder of Inditex and owner of global fashion giant Zara, has pledged €100 million in aid through the Amancio Ortega Foundation to support flood relief efforts in Valencia. The donation follows catastrophic flooding that struck the region last week, claiming at least 217 lives and causing widespread devastation.
The funding is set to be channeled through the social services departments of affected town councils, aimed at addressing the urgent needs of citizens impacted by the disaster. The Amancio Ortega Foundation emphasized its commitment to collaborating with local authorities to ensure the aid is delivered swiftly and effectively to victims.
“Extreme weather events have severely disrupted life in Valencia,” the foundation stated. Torrential rains, described as a year’s worth of precipitation falling in a single day, devastated the region, while parts of Catalonia, including Barcelona, also faced significant flooding. At Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, flooding led to over 80 flight cancellations and delays, further compounding the crisis.
The Amancio Ortega Foundation, established in 2001, has a long-standing focus on education and social welfare. It operates multiple initiatives, including a scholarship program enabling Spanish high school students to study in the U.S. and Canada, and projects that support vulnerable students in completing compulsory education. In social welfare, the foundation has developed key healthcare centers, such as Madrid’s first comprehensive pediatric palliative care facility and the NIPACE neurological rehabilitation center in Guadalajara.
In 2023, the foundation invested €81.1 million in projects aimed at aiding Spain’s most vulnerable communities, partnering with organizations like the Spanish Red Cross, Caritas Spain, and the Spanish Federation of Food Banks. This latest €100 million donation underscores Ortega’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and disaster relief efforts.
