UAE to Mandate Genetic Testing in Premarital Screenings for Emiratis from 2025

Abu Dhabi, November 7 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Abu Dhabi Department of Health announced that genetic testing will become a mandatory part of premarital screenings for all Emirati citizens beginning January 2025. The new requirement, introduced during a keynote session at the UAE Government Annual Meetings 2024, was detailed by Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi.

The genetic testing, conducted under the guidance of the Emirates Genome Council, will assess 570 genes associated with over 840 genetic disorders. Al Ghaithi highlighted that this preventive measure is aimed at reducing hereditary diseases by allowing couples to identify shared genetic mutations that could impact their future children, potentially leading to preventable genetic conditions. She noted that common genetic mutations can result in serious health issues, including vision and hearing loss, developmental delays, blood disorders, organ failure, and severe seizures.

“Genetic testing contributes to preserving the health of the community and securing a healthier future for coming generations. It enables couples to make informed family-planning decisions and provides avenues for early intervention, including personalised genetic counselling and reproductive solutions,” Al Ghaithi said.

The initiative is part of the Emirati Genome Programme, which has already identified significant genetic insights among Emiratis, including the discovery of new genetic variants. Al Ghaithi highlighted findings such as increased resilience to psychological stress in 25% of Emiratis, lactose tolerance in 46%, and a higher risk of Type 1 diabetes in 20% of future generations.

The Emirates Genome Council, chaired by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, oversees the Emirati Genome Programme, positioning the UAE as a leading center for genomics research. The programme aims to build one of the largest genomic databases globally, with 750,000 samples collected toward a target of one million.

This proactive health measure underscores the UAE’s commitment to reducing the prevalence of genetic disorders, enhancing public health, and promoting world-class healthcare through preventive and personalised treatment.
