Riyadh, August 7, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) marked World Breastfeeding Week, held annually from August 1 to 7, by launching an awareness campaign emphasizing the health benefits of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers.

The SFDA stated that breast milk is the ideal source of nutrition for newborns during the early months of life. It is easily digested, appropriately sized for an infant’s stomach, and provides immunity-enhancing antibodies from the mother. The Authority highlighted its role in reducing the risk of allergies, asthma, diabetes, anemia, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), while supporting the baby's brain and physical development.

According to the campaign, breastfeeding also benefits maternal health. It has been linked to a lower risk of breast and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis, and aids in postpartum weight loss. The release of oxytocin during breastfeeding also accelerates uterine recovery following childbirth.

To support breastfeeding success, the SFDA recommended initiating breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, feeding on demand, and maintaining maternal health through proper nutrition, hydration, and rest. Mothers were also advised to consult healthcare professionals in case of difficulties.

This initiative is part of the SFDA’s broader strategy to promote safe and natural nutrition, enhance public health awareness, and contribute to the development of healthier future generations.
