RIYADH, May 12 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially joined the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, signaling its commitment to preserving natural habitats and promoting environmental sustainability.
The announcement was made by the National Center for Wildlife (NCW), which will oversee implementation of the convention across Saudi Arabia in coordination with relevant national stakeholders.
Saudi Arabia’s accession reflects its growing role in global environmental efforts, particularly amid increasing challenges related to water security, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The NCW stated it will work to identify and nominate suitable sites for the Ramsar List, while ensuring effective conservation and sustainable management.
Wetlands are considered critical ecosystems, supporting 40% of the world’s species, storing 30% of global carbon, and providing vital services including water purification, agriculture support, climate regulation, and biodiversity protection.
NCW CEO Dr. Mohammed Qurban said: “The conservation of wetlands directly contributes to ecological balance, biodiversity protection, and sustainable development. The Kingdom’s accession to the Ramsar Convention is a strategic step that will enhance both environmental and economic benefits.”
The move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to protect natural assets and develop national policies that reinforce sustainability and long-term ecological resilience.
