Paris Meeting: Macron and Saudi Crown Prince To Discuss Ukraine And Other Issues

PARIS, France - French President Emmanuel Macron will host Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Paris on Friday for talks on the war in Ukraine and other matters of mutual concern, the French presidency announced.

The meeting comes at a critical time, as Russia and Ukraine are locked in a tense standoff over the latter’s bid to join NATO and the former’s military buildup near their shared border. The United States and its European allies have expressed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while warning Russia of serious consequences if it invades.

Saudi Arabia, a key regional ally of the West, has also offered to mediate in the conflict and help find a peaceful solution. Last month, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy attended a summit of the Arab League in Saudi Arabia, where he sought support from the Arab countries for his country’s aspirations.

The French presidency said that Macron and Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud will also discuss other topics of common interest, such as climate change, regional security, human rights and economic cooperation. The two leaders have maintained regular contact since Macron’s visit to Riyadh in 2018, when they agreed to strengthen their strategic partnership.

The Saudi Crown Prince is also expected to attend an international summit for a new global financial pact, to be held in Paris on June 22-23, and to take part in the kingdom’s official reception of Riyadh’s candidacy to host Expo 2030 on June 19.
