RIYADH, May 7 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – A native plant known as Teucrium oliverianum, or Al-Aihlan, is contributing to ecosystem restoration and desert stability across the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve, according to environmental experts.
The herbaceous perennial, endemic to the Arabian Peninsula, is noted for its resilience in arid environments. It is distinguished by long, slender stems and fine, bristled leaves that reduce water loss, making it highly valued as a grazing plant in desert habitats.
Specialists highlight that the plant’s forked root system plays a key role in stabilizing sandy soils, reducing sand movement, and mitigating desertification. Its presence also supports biodiversity, offering shelter and food to small desert animals and insects.
The spread of Teucrium oliverianum throughout the reserve reflects positive environmental trends. According to recent observations, the vegetation cover has reached its healthiest and most stable condition since the reserve was established in 2018.
The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve, located in the northern part of Saudi Arabia, continues to serve as a model for conservation and native habitat protection in the region.
