Jordan Calls for Emergency Arab League Meeting on Israeli Laws Restricting UNRWA Operations

Riyadh, October 29, 2024 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Jordan has called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League to discuss measures in response to recent Israeli Knesset laws that restrict the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in occupied Palestinian territories.

According to the Jordan News Agency (PETRA), the call for a meeting aims to reject and counteract the "invalid" laws enacted by the Israeli Knesset and to mobilize international support against them. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Sufian Qudah, stated that Jordan’s ambassador in Cairo and permanent representative to the Arab League were instructed to formally request the meeting at the level of permanent delegates. The goal is to establish a coordinated Arab response to confront what Jordan described as "illegal laws" targeting UNRWA’s ability to deliver essential services to Palestinian refugees.

Qudah warned of the “disastrous fallout” from Israel’s measures, which he characterized as an attempt to "politically assassinate" UNRWA by undermining its humanitarian mission amid escalating violence in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Jordan’s appeal comes amid heightened concerns over the humanitarian situation, with the agency facing mounting obstacles in its efforts to provide aid to Palestinian communities affected by recent conflicts.

In coordination with other Arab nations, Jordan is pushing for actions to protect Palestinians and ensure that UN and relief agencies like UNRWA can continue their work unimpeded. Qudah emphasized that Jordan is actively communicating with Arab states to formulate a joint plan to address and invalidate the restrictive laws and support UNRWA’s mission.
