JAZAN, Feb 19 (SAUDI ARABIA BREAKING NEWS) - Watermelon farmers in Saudi Arabia’s Jazan region have begun harvesting and marketing their crops, anticipating higher yields this year as demand surges ahead of Ramadan.

With 14,000 hectares of farmland dedicated to watermelon cultivation, the region is projected to produce over 15,000 tons of the fruit. Retailers are already transporting the early harvest to wholesale and retail markets across the Kingdom, where pricing is determined by size and quality.

A Saudi Press Agency tour of farms in Sabya governorate and local markets highlighted the high demand for Jazan’s watermelons, valued for their hydrating properties, particularly in hot weather. The fruit is rich in vitamins, boosting immunity and brain health, while also helping prevent dehydration.

NATIONAL EXPANSION

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, through its Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program (Saudi Reef), is supporting efforts to increase agricultural efficiency and boost food security. Beyond Jazan, key watermelon-producing regions include Riyadh, Al-Jouf, Hail, Makkah, and Qassim.

The government is also promoting local watermelon production through seasonal festivals, which feature exhibitions, workshops, and marketing initiatives aimed at increasing domestic agricultural output in line with Vision 2030 economic diversification goals.

CULTIVATION AND TRADE

Jazan’s watermelon farms operate on a 90-day cultivation cycle, with crops grown after seasonal rainfall or controlled irrigation. Watermelons thrive in well-drained sandy soil, making them resistant to drought and humidity. Each vine extends up to three meters and produces five to seven fruits.

With Ramadan set to boost consumer demand, Jazan’s farmers and traders are preparing for a strong season, as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its agricultural industry and reduce reliance on imports.
