Washington, May 19, 2025 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) – Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, his office announced on Sunday.
Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after experiencing urinary symptoms, and is currently reviewing treatment options with his family and physicians. The cancer is classified as Stage 4, the most advanced stage, but his office noted it appears to be hormone-sensitive, which could allow for effective management.
“Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support,” Biden wrote in a post on X early Monday.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), of the 236,659 prostate cancer cases diagnosed in 2021, only 8% involved cancer that had spread beyond the prostate. Biden’s condition, however, was confirmed to have spread to his bones.
His office stated the cancer scored nine out of 10 on the Gleason scale, a system used to evaluate the aggressiveness of prostate cancer. Dr. Herbert Lepor, a urologist at NYU Langone Health, noted that while a score of nine indicates “very high risk,” many patients can live “five to ten years and beyond” with appropriate care.
Dr. Chris George, medical director of the cancer program at the Northwestern Health Network, stated that although metastatic prostate cancer is no longer considered curable, advances in treatment have made it manageable in many cases.
Biden’s health had been a subject of national debate during his presidency from 2021 to 2025. He ended his reelection campaign in July 2024, shortly after a widely criticized debate performance raised concerns among Democratic party leaders.
Former President Donald Trump, Biden’s 2024 electoral rival, expressed sympathy in a post on Truth Social. “Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” Trump said.
Further updates on Biden’s treatment plan are expected in the coming days.
