Riyadh, May 24 (Saudi Arabia Breaking News) — Diriyah, the historic birthplace of the Saudi state, has been named one of the Global Eco-Friendly Destinations for 2025 by Wanderlust, a leading British travel platform that annually recognizes destinations committed to sustainable tourism practices.

The announcement follows a joint nomination submitted by the Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) and the Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA), outlining Diriyah’s initiatives in environmental preservation, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism development.

Fahd Hamidaddin, CEO and Board Member of the STA, said Diriyah’s selection reinforces Saudi Arabia’s growing profile as a leader in sustainable travel.

“This recognition is a testament to our strategy of empowering local partners and showcasing national destinations in international markets,” he said. “It further solidifies Saudi Arabia’s position on the global tourism map as the fastest-growing destination in the world.”

Jerry Inzerillo, CEO of the DGDA, emphasized Diriyah’s unique standing as a heritage site and its commitment to sustainability.

“This international recognition highlights Diriyah’s role as the cradle of the Saudi state and our dedication to preserving its heritage while applying the highest environmental and cultural sustainability standards,” he said.

The recognition comes as Saudi Arabia continues to advance its Vision 2030 tourism goals, supported by massive infrastructure investment and a focus on sustainability and cultural preservation.

The Kingdom welcomed approximately 116 million visitors in 2024, with a target of 150 million by 2030, positioning itself as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourism markets.
