Sydney, March 7, 2025 – Australian authorities have ordered thousands of residents in the eastern regions to evacuate ahead of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which is expected to make landfall north of Brisbane as a Category 2 storm. The cyclone has already unleashed heavy rain, powerful winds exceeding 100 km/h (62 mph), and massive waves, causing power outages, airport closures, and widespread disruption.

Severe Weather Impacting Queensland and New South Wales

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned that Cyclone Alfred’s slow movement could result in prolonged heavy rainfall and flooding, raising concerns for communities along the coast. The storm was last tracked 120 km (75 miles) from Brisbane and 85 km (53 miles) from the Gold Coast, with winds battering the region.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli urged residents to take precautions, emphasizing that evacuation centers should be a last resort. "Dozens of centers have been opened, but we urge people to move to safer areas where possible," Crisafulli said at a press conference.

Power Outages and Transport Disruptions

The cyclone has already left over 80,000 homes without power across Queensland and New South Wales, with the Gold Coast among the hardest-hit areas. Power companies are working to restore electricity, but conditions remain challenging.

Brisbane Airport was forced to suspend operations on Thursday, while public transport in the city remains halted due to flooding and strong winds. Authorities have also shut more than 1,000 schools in Queensland and 280 schools in northern New South Wales as a precaution.

Warnings and Precautions

Emergency services have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid flooded roads, and follow official safety updates. The slow-moving nature of Cyclone Alfred means it could linger over the region, increasing the risk of flash floods, storm surges, and further damage.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with further updates expected as the cyclone makes landfall.
