AlBidayah Zone at Islamic Arts Biennale Showcases Rare Islamic Artifacts

Jeddah, March 11, 2025 – The AlBidayah zone (The Beginning) at the Islamic Arts Biennale is currently being held at the Western Hajj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, running until May 25, 2025. This remarkable exhibition is themed "And all that is in Between", offering a rare opportunity to view Islamic artifacts and treasures that highlight sacred sites in Islam, many of which are rarely seen outside Makkah and Madinah.
A standout piece in the collection is a historical mobile stairway that once provided access to the elevated door of the Holy Kaaba. The stairway, measuring about 5 meters in length and 4 meters in height, is intricately adorned with Baroque-inspired decorations. It was originally presented to the Holy Kaaba in the 1820s AD by the ruler of the Carnatic Sultanate in South India. This stairway, used by men during the Kaaba's door opening, played a key role in allowing access to one of the most sacred sites in Islam.
Additionally, a silver stairway gifted by the ruler of Rampur, India, between 1865-1887 AD, was exclusively reserved for women. These unique artifacts provide a deep historical connection between Islamic rulers and Makkah, highlighting the centuries-old tradition of gifting sacred objects to the Holy Kaaba as a sign of reverence.
The Islamic Arts Biennale offers visitors a chance to explore these treasures, underscoring the cultural significance and historical importance of these sacred items in Islamic heritage.
